“Son of a bitch bastard, rat fink, dickhead. Male! ” Sydney muttered under

her breath as she strode down the beach. The long, brightly colored fabric

of her gypsy skirt flapped wetly around her ankles as she kicked up water.

“Wipe my mind? Wipe my mind? Wipe my mind?”

She hiked the skirt up her thighs with both hands so she could walk a little

farther into the waves. Didn’t matter how the hel she said it, wiping a

person’s mind sounded ridiculous. Bizarre. And damned . . . unfair.

She couldn’t believe he’d used her, then planned to make her forget

everything. Shit. And once she got past the bul shit part of it, the fact

remained that being able to clear someone’s memory was really damn

cool. The repercussions alone were endless.

The writer in her thought so, you bet, but the woman part of her thought

it sucked. She could forgive his wizardly tendencies—he was what he was

and God knew, she’d dated worse. No, her hot button, after the whole

Michaela fiasco, was the trust issue. She thought she’d been offered that

trust by Lucas, only to find out that he’d been planning a mind-sweep

thing all along. He was going to steal her memories, every second she’d

had with him, and it hit her where it hurt.

She was stil a little raw from the past year with people calling her a liar to

her face. A year of people tel ing her they no longer trusted her. Tears of

embarrassment and hurt—yes, dammit, hurt—fil ed her eyes and made

her chest feel tight.

Even though she knew it was ridiculous to feel this depth of pain, that a

man she barely knew could inflict a wound so deeply, it ripped at her. Like

having salt poured on a festering gash.

Even her usually one hundred percent supportive family had been

devastated that she’d fabricated Tomás’s story. They loved her, but they

hadn’t understood, still didn’t really, what had made her take the family’s

pain and turn a spotlight on it. To them, she’d used something very

private for her own profit. Which, to be fair, she had.

Unintentional y. None of it started out that way. She used both hands to

wipe her wet cheeks as she splashed through the warm shallow water. A

sob caught in her throat. She wanted to fling her arms out wide and spin

in a circle, yel ing out at the top of her lungs, “I screwed up, okay? I

fucked up and I’m sorry. ”

Sorry that she’d made up a better, more interesting story to bring

attention to mental health issues. Sorry that she’d kept her mouth shut

and not corrected everyone when they thought it was a true story. Sorry

that she’d been caught. Sorry that she’s been held up for public ridicule.

Just damned well, freaking sorry.

Her embarrassment had been a constant for almost a year. She wanted to

shed it like a lead-lined jacket. She wanted to step back into her great,

challenging, interesting life without that dark cloud forever hanging over

her. Instead, she’d invited it back in with a single phone call.

Night Secrets

The sun beat down on her head and bare shoulders, and the water

splashed playful y around her calves and knees.
